which operating system works best for gaming?

i use windows xp home and xp64 pro in a dual boot system and was thinking of going on to use vista, i have original copies of vista home basic and vista ultimate with 32 and 64 bit options. how are these for gaming and general use? anyone else using them. i guess a load of older games i play wont run on vista as they didnt when i first tried vista when it came out. any change there?
any help. ideas and sugestions welcome.

hmm, i run vista dude, and almost every thing i got works. and after a while i really like the way it handles too.

i have quite a few older xp games, star trek bridge commander, kotor 1 and 2 and i have no probs running, and anything that some times dont like vista, run it in compatability mode and i usually works.

overall vista is pretty good.

Windows 7. It's Windows Vista (same core), but not nearly as bloated.

Windows 7 is proving to work nicely.

im not looking to buy yet another copy of windows, i have vista home basic which i installed pre service pack one and hated. nothing would run on it at the time. i also have an unopened copy of vista ultimate. i guess with the service packs and updates vista isnt the pile of nonfunctioning crap it was before, what i need to know is is it worth installing vista now or sticking with xp? my pc specs are able to handle vista well so no issues there.

I run windows 7 in a multi boot system along side XP pro and xubuntu (i like the XFCE manage over gnome)

Gotta say it's pretty good for gaming, i got a high FPS rate and im sure i got a better fps rate than i do on xp on some games

Vistas good too though, its not nearly as bad as everyone claims it is

With my new PC I went form XP, to Vista 64. I like it.
I have had no probs with BSODS or crashes (I lie but it was tracked down to a bad stick of RAM not Vista),

Icannot compare directly the two OS's since the pc's are radically different but overall I like the stability of Vista, and all my games work a treat.

Lol you might have to wait a while for that, since 7 is stated for release in 2010, and service packs usually follow a year / two years after that :p
