ive been lucky, all my kids were raised in a single floor detached house and with a well fenced garden. they didnt have stairs till we moved back to Fife maybe 6 years ago. we still used a safety gate to keep them out of the kitchen tho.
my oldest daughter has one at the top and bottom of her stairs and her son is not quite 5.
