Phoenix.

Make a duplicate layer of your picture.

Use the selection tool to make say a square in the top half of your pic.

Go to select/feather and set the level to 50%

Then select inverse

Use the eraser at about 40% opacity and erase the bottom half of the pic.

Make the underlying layer (the duplicate youmade non visible by clicking off the eye icon.

You should get something like this.

check out the portrait in the bottom left you can see he is slightly transparent , thats what i was aiming for can i know how i done it now if you would like me to post, note i found it easier this way then the way you explained...


you select a back ground, then create another layer select the graident tool with black and white then just select where you want it to go transpaent and then you are done!!

Mine does a similar thing as can be seen below and as you said originally, there's a way of doing it using a layer mask which I cant quite remember how to do lol.

Your method of using the gradient tool seems to offer a cleaner/smoother transition than mine anyway.
