from belgium I think it would be cheaper by car (even more if you come together) you live not that far from calais, ferry boat isn't that expensive and after that drivin from Dover to B'ham would take as much time as drivin from Brussels to Paris

about ferry cost goes from about 35€ to 75€ for a one way trip Calais->Dover (depends on time and date) you can just check on P&O or Seafrance website
