Hey.

As you certainly have noticed the spambots are quite active here on the board.

The phpbb3 3.0.4 captcha has been cracked which makes the life for spambots soo much simplier then normally.

Tho its not the case on all boards, I just had the very first spambot successfully registrating last night, tho it didnt succeed on posting anything (guessing it was a human spambot).

What captcha settings are you guys running?
(increase the visual difficulty)

Add some custom profile fields. (Atleast one thats required and make sure the one autopicked isnt allowed as answer).

Thats some basic stuff, visit http://www.phpbb.com for more information.

to me best way to avoid this kind of spam is to make profile's validation by admin so you can check who want's to connect and see if the mail adress is fake

That works on small forums, and/or on forums with really really active site admins cause otherwise its just a really annoying thing for the users having to wait for some admin to activate their accounts (dunno if equal to spambot-annoying but once there u wont have any spambot-annoying to compare with.)

Not that Jason will finally listen, but here it is again:
BLOCK THE ASIAN IP RANGE.

It's the ONLY solution. Captchas in general have been cracked, and will never offer more then a day of protection. Rearranging input fields is no use either cause of intelligent crawlers.

I did listen to you Ian!

I asked you what the IP range was for Asia?!
But then you weren't around to see that either!

well I guess blocking the Asian ip range works for ssdi/bnw and such since they are pretty much just european, the game Im running on the other hand got with its currently really small playerbase players from 39 countries (based on just last month google analytics)
