came across this yesterday thought it would be usefull to those who play on wireless. It's how to tweak your broadband to its optimum on wireless.

First of all you need to download some wireless scanning software if you havent already! make sure you download it on your wireless device doesnt work if you are hardwired in.

type in google, inSSIDer 2.1 this is free and is used by virgin media - this scans your wireless settings along with everyone else on the same isp as you on your street.
for example 26 people on your road use virgin media 20 of those use wireless, it will scan and show you what channel all those people are on 10 may be on channel 1, 5 on channel 3, 3 on channel 4, 2 on channel 2. you want to pick the channel with the least people on, there may be one person on channel 11 so choose that channel 11.

run a scan on your laptop using the software this will then tell you how many other users are on the same broadcasting channel as you, for example if you are on channel 1 along with 5 or 6 others that means 7 people are on the same channel all using the same broadband if there is only one person on channel 11 that is the one you want to be on, which ever channel shows the least people. make a note of the channel with the least people on.

now....

open internet browser, delete everything in the address bar and type in:

192.168.0.1

this will take you to the log in page for your modem. it will now ask for username and password. the details are on the stickers at the back of your modem. if you havent changed your password it will be the standard username = admin password = changeme ( ideally you want to change these to your own as everyone knows this password/username and can leach from your internet.

once this has been done you will be directed to a screen showing 3 red boxes, under this says advanced settings, click it.
on the left hand side is a menu, look for wireless settings _ click it.
you will now see some menu boxes in the main screen, look for where it says channel and change it the channel you wrote down select the correct channel click play refreshh your page to make sure the chaneel has held then close everything down.


you are now on a wireless channel with less people using it and you should see a boost in performance. if you are unsure of what ive just said then go onto virgin media and look at the video how to increase wirelss performance.
